Album: the yunahon mixtape (2017)
Also try:  any quality 2000s-2010s emo? 2019's Get up Kids release?

"Really Doe" by Danny Brown

Song: Really Doe (ft. Kendrick, Earl, Ab-soul)
Artist: Danny Brown
Album: Atrocity Exhibition (2016)
Commentary: There's some folk out there pushing boundaries of hip hop and Danny Brown is doing it well. This song makes good use of Earl & Kendrick. I love Danny Brown's rapping too.

"Wake Up" by clipping.

Song: Wake Up
Artist: clipping.
Album: Splendor & Misery (2016)
Commentary: Daveed can really spit 'em. Still trying to get into this year's album. I feel like Clipping is pretty uneven, every album. There's cool production on a lot (most?) songs and they just don't showcase Daveed Diggs' skills enough.

Song: For Mayor in Splitsville

Song: Sundays (Live at KCRW)
Artist: Lucinda Williams
Album: Lucinda Williams (Deluxe Edition)
Also try:  Liz Phair, Richard Buckner
Commentary: HOW HAVE I NOT POSTED LUCINDA WILLIAMS HERE BEFORE. What even is this blog? It's kind of hard to narrow down to a song, because I appreciate her at an album level, but this one -- the live version specifically -- was an earworm.

"Dublin City Sky" by Fontaines D.C.

Song: Dublin City Sky
Artist: Fontaines DC
Album: Dogrel
Commentary: Okay, this song is the odd one out on a dope album. It's the least punk and I love the rest of the songs, but it's just nice.

"Tarhatazed" by Mdou Moctar

Song: Tarhatazed
Artist: Mdou Moctar
Album: Ilana (the Creator)
Also try:  Tinariwen, Bombino, other desert blues
Commentary: Mdou Moctar is a Tamashek guitarist that plays those "desert blues" I love from the Saharan West African region. He's not my favorite of the group and he had a heavy auto-tune phaze that I was not a fan of, but he still rocks. IN FACT, he came to Kentucky, 10 minutes from where I live, to play. So he's the first of the genre to be anywhere near me and it was awwwweeesssommmme.

"Bombshelter, pt. 2" by the Halo Benders

Song: Bombshelter, pt. 2
Artist: the Halo Benders
Album: Don't Tell Me Now
Commentary: The Halo Benders are weird. A lotta times it seems like Doug Martsch wrote a cool BtS B-side and then Calvin Johnson just sings over it. But that's often nice, since they're both great. Calvin here has a fun pro-draft-dodging oration on top of a nice piece of work by Doug.

Song: A Lamb in the Land of Payday Loans
Artist: Efrim Manuel Menuck
Album: Pissing Stars
Commentary: I've never got into Menuck's other bands, but this album is rad and I feel like I should really check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, even though those are obnoxiously long band names.
