Performance: Live at the Niger River
Artist: Mdou Moctar
Commentary: Mesmerizing footage and playing. Love these folks returning to their native soil to shred at sunrise. (a rare artist repeat on this page 😉)

"Hall of Death" by Matt Sweeney & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy ft. Mdou Moctar
Song: Hall of Death
Artist: Matt Sweeney & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy with Mdou Moctar & Ahmoudou Madassane
Album: Superwolves (2021)
Also try: Superwolf (2003); Mdou Moctar, Les Filles de Illighadad
Commentary: I heard this song and thought, "WOW. Matt Sweeney has been studying those Tamashek desert blues." But it's actually just Mdou Moctar playing lead guitar plus Ahmoudou Madassane of Les Filles de Illighadad. Which is DOPE. And I was also already excited about a 2nd Superwolf album. A nice release!
UPDATE: Saw this live in Feb 2022 (no Mdou Moctar :( :() but Matt Sweeney definitely learned how to play in the desert blues style from Mdou for this song, so it was great.

"Tarhatazed" by Mdou Moctar
Song: Tarhatazed
Artist: Mdou Moctar
Album: Ilana (the Creator)
Also try: Tinariwen, Bombino, other desert blues
Commentary: Mdou Moctar is a Tamashek guitarist that plays those "desert blues" I love from the Saharan West African region. He's not my favorite of the group and he had a heavy auto-tune phaze that I was not a fan of, but he still rocks. IN FACT, he came to Kentucky, 10 minutes from where I live, to play. So he's the first of the genre to be anywhere near me and it was awwwweeesssommmme.

"Aïtma" by Toumast
Song: Aïtma
Artist: Toumast
Album: Songs for Desert Refugees
Also try: the other songs off of this album; Sublime Frequencies' Guitars of Agadez series; Tinariwen's Aman Iman
Commentary: The Imuhagh people (also Tuareg; in Saharan North Africa) play a style of music called assouf, which I believe is also called "desert blues" in English (although that might be more of an umbrella term). I also posted a track by Tinariwen, who are featured on this disc, in 2009. "Aïtma" comes off an excellent compilation showcasing a range of talent in the genre. The album is called Songs for Desert Refugees in reference to the ongoing conflict in the deserts of Northern Mali. I'm woefully ignorant of the details of the complexities of the issues of the region, but the proceeds do go to NGOs who work with those displaced and disrupted by the fighting in the region. Join the supporters here. And I do quite recommend the music.
