Songs: "My Heart and the Real World" & "History Lesson, Pt. 2"
Artist: the Minutemen
Album: Double Nickels on the Dime (1984)
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶🎶
Commentary: Excellent, fun, off-kilter album. I have no idea why I've always liked "History Lesson, pt. 2," but it's my most-listened Minutemen song.

"Photoshoot (Flying Lotus remix)" by Gucci Mane
Song: Photoshoot (Flying Lotus remix)
Artist: Gucci Mane
Album: Adult Swim Singles Project 2009
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶I see the boy, see the boy, see the boy. Lemme take a polaroid, polaroid, camera flash🎶
🎶Get your camera phone on, it's a photoshoot🎶
Commentary: This was my first introduction to Flying Lotus and his genius as a producer. I didn't like Gucci Mane at the time or the kind of percussive drum kits like we hear here. But something about this song I have loved. It gets stuck in my head and springs to mind regularly, and it's been so long that he's singing about a "camera phone"! I also have to hype the Adult Swim Singles music operation. They've been curating excellent music selections for YEARS. Go ahead, check out some of their releases. I can't tell if they've ceased since 2021, but there's still good stuff there. I hope they keep going because they tend to be ahead of the game.

"Mercho" by Lil Cake
Song: Mercho
Artist: Lil Cake
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶En el mercho, escuchando fercho🎶
Commentary: I might end up taking this song down, because I don't loooooove it. But the chorus is so catchy! And following up on the TikTok trends en español from Thursday, it seemed fun. Plus the guy has a Bengals jersey on?! weird. It's fun, the beat is nice, I guess my least favorite part is Lil Cake's voice here...

"Tika Molamu" by Sebongile Kgaila
Song: Tika Molamu (Knobkerrie Throw)
Artist: Sebongile Kgaila
Album: I'm not here to hunt rabbits -- Guitar & Folk Styles From Botswana (2018)
Commentary: A really nice collection of folk & guitar music out of Botswana. Well-produced by, I guess, the Piranha label out of Berlin. You should probably watch some videos of the cool way people are playing overhand guitar in Botswana -- some examples in this NPR article.

"Leonard's Lake" & an excerpt from ~Third Side of Tape~ by Lil Ugly Mane
Song: "Leonard's Lake" and "Infinite Rave"
Artist: Lil Ugly Mane
Album: Oblivion Access (2015) and Third Side of Tape (2015)
Also try:
Commentary: I guess I've posted something by Shawn Kemp (another alter ego of Travis Miller), but I could've sworn I'd already posted Leonard's Lake. I like Lil Ugly Mane's early stuff, I think he's loosely associated with the Raider Klan and Denzel Curry. He got more experimental, which was great, and lately Volcanic Bird Enemy was more poppy (and not hip hop?!) yet good. Also, lol, I thought the 2nd was called "Infinite Rain" -- it's a segment, and highlight, of the long mix, Third Side of Tape.

"Landwerk I" by Nathan Salsburg
Song: Landwerk I
Artist: Nathan Salsburg
Album: Landwerk (2020)
Commentary: Fellow Kentuckian, Nathan Salsburg, does some nice guitar work. With Landwerk, he uses crackling old 78 recordings and loops to build a series of haunting and repetive melodies. Recommend.

"Grass" & "For Reverend Green" by Animal Collective
Songs: "Grass" and "For Reverend Green"
Artist: Animal Collective
Albums: Feels (2005) & Strawberry Jam (2007)
Commentary: Shocking to notice I've never put any Animal Collective on here. And it's different enough from Panda Bear. But yeah, the 00s saw me listening to a lot of them, well into the 10s and they still rock. Feels, Strawberry Jam, and Merriweather Post Pavilion were all awesome and appreciated. I usually try to vary the type of song I post, and maybe I did a little, but I just love it when they scream, so we got two screamers here. Animal Collective deserves a double post in my anthologizing here.

Song: Good Girl/Carrots
Artist: Panda Bear
Album: Person Pitch (2007)

Commentary: Surprised I've never posted any Panda Bear. Person Pitch is such a good album. I missed Panda Bear at P4K :/ My cousin wanted to see him because he'd heard them in a Daft Punk song haha

"Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass?)" by Soul Glo
Song: Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass?)
Artist: Soul Glo
Album: Diaspora Problems (2022)
Commentary: I already liked Soul Glo, so it was nice to see them live, also at Pitchfork. The guitarist (GG Guerra?) was so fun and my cousin really liked how Pierce Jordan screamed.

Song: Pa'lante
Artist: Hurray for the Riff Raff
Album: The Navigator (2017)
Also try: Cat Power, Neko Case
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶Do your best, but fuck the rest. Be something!🎶
Commentary: I didn't think I'd ever heard of this band before, but I have heard Pa'lante. I just saw them at Pitchfork Music Festival and they were fun. And now I find out the lead singer is nonbinary?? dope.

"The Keith Haring Story" by Jeffrey Lewis
Song: The Keith Haring Story
Artist: Jeffrey Lewis
Also try: Other anti-folk music, Jeffrey Lewis' comics
Commentary: Ope. Guess I've been lax in posting! Just saw JL & the Voltage live last night. It was pretty fun. Saw/heard this biography and learned something, also thought it was awesome. Listened to him in high school, namely "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror."

"Ana Bas Saktalak" by Nancy Mounir
Song: "Ana Bas Saktalak"
Artist: Nancy Mounir with Fatma Sherry
Album: Nozhet El Nofous (2022)
Also try: Women of Egypt 1924-1931: Pioneers of Stardom and Fame; old 78s of Egyptian music
Commentary: So many wonderful musical traditions around the world. I'm so glad there's so much access to so much of it today. I'm grateful to the musicians and their lineages. Appreciate the musicologists and archivists preserving these histories. And I ALSO love the current artists working from and with older stuff. So this album is dope. Apparently Nancy Mounir is also in a metal band (Massive Scar Era).

"The Tragic Tale of Bisen Francisco" by Signor Benedick the Moor
Song: The Tragic Tale of Bisen Francisco
Artist: SB the Moor
Album: El Negro (2014)
Commentary: Another excellent Scaruffi find. I don't know how often I disclose in this blog that I find a lot of great material from Piero Scaruffi's lists. He's pretty good with experimental music and stuff that pushes genre boundaries. But yeah, this album is cool and SB makes stuff I'm definitely interested in.
