Song: She's Leaving You
Artist: MJ Lenderman
Album: Manning Fireworks (2024)
Also try: Pinegrove, Car Seat Headrest, maybe Will Johnson projects (e.g. Centro-matic)
Commentary: I feel like MJ Lenderman doesn't necessarily stand out a lot, musically, and sounds like a lot of other bands. But they sound like a lot of bands I like haha. Just kind of folk influenced indie rock type stuff.

"Holiday" by "The Get Up Kids"
Song: Holiday
Artist: The Get Up Kids
Album: Something to Write Home About (1999)
Commentary: My brother bought me this album when I was in high school, a few years after it came out. If I remember correctly, I was dabbling in emo, pop punk, and screamo music, but OF COURSE the separatist Christian subgenres. So my brother said something along the lines of, "At least listen to good emo." and gave me this CD. I find it a pretty enjoyable album to this day. During my last summer of camp (2020) -- when I lived alone in the lower 100 acres among all the empty cabins in the woods -- I just left STWHA in the CD player of my minivan all summer, so everywhere I went for 3 months was soundtracked with this album picking right back up and looping around and around. "Summer's swallowed us whole" indeed.

"I Saw The Beam In My Sister's Eye" by Mamaleek
Song: I Saw The Beam In My Sister's Eye
Artist: Mamaleek
Album: Fever Dream (2008)
Also try: Liturgy, deafheaven
Commentary: Perhaps a challenging listen, I'm thinking this one won't be a crowd-pleaser on here (not that there has ever been a crowd here). I like this song. I was not listening to Mamaleek (or any? metal) in 2008, but this reminds me of what Liturgy was doing a little later. And that I did come to like. I only got into Mamaleek in the 2020s and I need to delve deeper into the earlier catalogue. They've still got it.

"757" by 100 gecs
Song: 757
Artist: 100 gecs
Album: 10000 gecs (2023)
Commentary: Saw 100 gecs at Pitchfork Music Festival this summer and it was very fun. I haven't heard a lot of hyperpop or whatever, but this is a fun genre.

"Decent Man" by Lawrence Rothman
Song: Decent Man (ft. Lucinda Williams)
Artist: Lawrence Rothman
Album: Good Morning, America (2021)
Also try: THe National, Nick Cave, Lou Reed
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶Are there any decent men left?🎶
Commentary: Just discovered Lawrence Rothman and I dig. I'm only one rep into Good Morning, America and I can't wait to hear their latest country album, The Plow That Broke the Plains. This song gave some the National vibes and I def love Lucinda. Lawrence Rothman strikes me as an interesting gender-fluid person who doesn't seem to have gotten a particularly early start in music.

Song: Blend
Artist: Sandy Bull
Album: Fantasias for Guitar & Banjo (1963)
Also try: Hamza El Din, John Fahey
Commentary: What a debut album. Just learned that Sandy Bull and Hamza El Din roomed together the year this album was released, which explains a lot. They both are awesome.

"Elle M'a Oublie" by Joe Falcón
Song: Elle M'a Oublie (She Has Forgotten Me)
Artist: Joseph Falcón with Cléoma & Orphy Breaux
Album: B-side of "C'est Si Triste San Lui" 78 (1929)
Also try: other early Cajun collections, such as Yazoo's Early American Cajun Music, Arhoolie's Cajun Breakdown, etc.
Commentary: I've heard a few other songs by Joe & Cléoma (who were married) and they rock. Cléoma's singing is great, but I just love the vocals in this song. Heard on Dust-to-Digital's the Harry Smith's B-Sides release.

2 songs from the Minutemen
Songs: "My Heart and the Real World" & "History Lesson, Pt. 2"
Artist: the Minutemen
Album: Double Nickels on the Dime (1984)
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶Our band could be your life🎶
Commentary: Excellent, fun, off-kilter album. I have no idea why I've always liked "History Lesson, pt. 2," but it's my most-listened Minutemen song.

"Photoshoot (Flying Lotus remix)" by Gucci Mane
Song: Photoshoot (Flying Lotus remix)
Artist: Gucci Mane
Album: Adult Swim Singles Project 2009
Lyrics that resound:: 🎶I see the boy, see the boy, see the boy. Lemme take a polaroid, polaroid, camera flash🎶
🎶Get your camera phone on, it's a photoshoot🎶
Commentary: This was my first introduction to Flying Lotus and his genius as a producer. I didn't like Gucci Mane at the time or the kind of percussive drum kits like we hear here. But something about this song I have loved. It gets stuck in my head and springs to mind regularly, and it's been so long that he's singing about a "camera phone"! I also have to hype the Adult Swim Singles music operation. They've been curating excellent music selections for YEARS. Go ahead, check out some of their releases. I can't tell if they've ceased since 2021, but there's still good stuff there. I hope they keep going because they tend to be ahead of the game.

"Leonard's Lake" & an excerpt from ~Third Side of Tape~ by Lil Ugly Mane
Song: "Leonard's Lake" and "Infinite Rave"
Artist: Lil Ugly Mane
Album: Oblivion Access (2015) and Third Side of Tape (2015)
Also try:
Commentary: I guess I've posted something by Shawn Kemp (another alter ego of Travis Miller), but I could've sworn I'd already posted Leonard's Lake. I like Lil Ugly Mane's early stuff, I think he's loosely associated with the Raider Klan and Denzel Curry. He got more experimental, which was great, and lately Volcanic Bird Enemy was more poppy (and not hip hop?!) yet good. Also, lol, I thought the 2nd was called "Infinite Rain" -- it's a segment, and highlight, of the long mix, Third Side of Tape.

Song: Landwerk I
Artist: Nathan Salsburg
Album: Landwerk (2020)
Commentary: Fellow Kentuckian, Nathan Salsburg, does some nice guitar work. With Landwerk, he uses crackling old 78 recordings and loops to build a series of haunting and repetive melodies. Recommend.

"Grass" & "For Reverend Green" by Animal Collective
Songs: "Grass" and "For Reverend Green"
Artist: Animal Collective
Albums: Feels (2005) & Strawberry Jam (2007)
Commentary: Shocking to notice I've never put any Animal Collective on here. And it's different enough from Panda Bear. But yeah, the 00s saw me listening to a lot of them, well into the 10s and they still rock. Feels, Strawberry Jam, and Merriweather Post Pavilion were all awesome and appreciated. I usually try to vary the type of song I post, and maybe I did a little, but I just love it when they scream, so we got two screamers here. Animal Collective deserves a double post in my anthologizing here.

Song: The Tragic Tale of Bisen Francisco
Artist: SB the Moor
Album: El Negro (2014)
Commentary: Another excellent Scaruffi find. I don't know how often I disclose in this blog that I find a lot of great material from Piero Scaruffi's lists. He's pretty good with experimental music and stuff that pushes genre boundaries. But yeah, this album is cool and SB makes stuff I'm definitely interested in.
