Version:

"Sister Betina" by Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit

Song: Sister Betina
Artist: Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit
Album: Very Best Mixtape (2008)
Lyrics that resound: 🎶tibidibidibi doba in the meantime Hibiri🎶 Commentary: One of those that I can't believe didn't make it on here when I posted regularly and was spinning The Very Best like it was going out of style. "Sister Betina" popped into my head today, but they had two solid albums in a row! "Dinosaur on the Ark," "Tengazako," "Kadja Manja" -- all good times (especially if you know the originals from the 00s). I try to sing along (poorly) in Chichewa with some of the irresistible tunes.

Version:

"Guilty" by Tirzah

Song: Guilty
Artist: Tirzah
Album: Devotion (2018)
Commentary:Some nice songs at the end of this album

Version:

"Don't Shoot Guns Down" & "Free" by Sault

Song: "Don't Shoot Guns Down" & "Free"
Artist: Sault
Album: Untitled (Black is) and Untitled (Rise) (2020)
Commentary: Sault released two cool albums last year: Untitled (Rise) and Untitled (Black is). In researching this post, found out they had another this fall but it was only "available" for 99 days? What?! Membership is unclear but may feature some other musicians I've posted: Little Simz and Michael Kiwanuka

Version:

"The Mute Wide-Open Eye of All Things" by Kiran Leonard

Song: The Mute Wide-Open Eye of All Things
Artist: Kiran Leonard
Album: Devaraun Shaun (2017)
Commentary: When I was looking up the title, I found out how literary this album is? References to James Joyce, every song devoted to an author. Now I have to read some Clarice Lispector. (this is nice music with piano)

Version:

"All the King's Men" by Wild Beasts

Song: All the King's Men
Artist: Wild Beasts
Album: Two Dancers (2009)
Lyrics that resound: 🎵 Girls from Shipley, girls from Roedean. Let me tell my darling what that means 🎵
Commentary: This song popped up in my head after lying dormant for years. I liked this album in 2009 -- might have to give it another listen. The song title makes me want to re-read Robert Penn Warren's excellent novel of the same name.

Version:

"Slave" by Duval Timothy

Song: Slave (ft. Twin Shadow)
Artist: Duval Timothy
Album: Help (2020)
Commentary: Think I saw this album on Pitchfork. It's great. Intrigued to encounter more of their multidisicplinary work.

Version:

"Venom" by Little Simz

Song: Venom
Artist: Little Simz
Album: GREY Area (2019)
Commentary: Little Simz can spit some bars. I don't know how British rappers got overrepresented in my listens in 2019, but I'm not disappointed.

Version:

"Streatham" by Dave

Song: Streatham
Artist: Dave
Album: Psychodrama (2019)
Commentary: Cool album. Dave's a good rapper.

Version:

"Ogre" by Richard Dawson

Song: Ogre
Artist: Richard Dawson
Album: Peasant
Commentary: Strange music going for some folksy English vibes (Old English, if you take the music video).

Version:

"T5" by Swet Shop Boys

Song: T5
Artist: Swet Shop Boys
Album: Cashmere
Also try:   Heems, Das Racist, not Riz MC's solo stuff (he's much improved in tandem with Heems)
Commentary: Loooove this album. Glad Heems is still kickin.

Version:

"Evidently Chickentown" by John Cooper Clarke

Song: Evidently Chickentown
Artist: John Cooper Clarke
Album: Snap, Crackle, & Bop
Commentary: Two Brits in a row. I guess I heard this on The Sopranos like a lot of folks. My parents thought it sounded disturbing and I screamed, "YOU SQUARES."

Version:

"New England" by Billy Bragg

Song: New England
Artist: Billy Bragg
Album: Life's a Riot
Commentary: Catchy!

Version:

"Dum Surfer" by King Krule

Song: "Dum Surfer"
Artist: King Krule
Album: The OOZ
Also try:  Jonathan Richman, maybe.
Commentary: I like this album. This song keeps my head noddin'.

Version:

"Johnny and Mary" by Todd Terje

Song: Johnny and Mary feat. Bryan Ferry
Artist: Todd Terje
Album: It's Album Time
Commentary: This is the stand-out track on a decent album. It’s the best and it’s pretty different than the rest of the disco tracks. Not sure what kind of radio station would play the “radio edit” though, ha.

Version:

"Cherish the Day" by Sade

Song: Cherish the Day
Artist: Sade
Album: Love Deluxe
Commentary: Shuttle driver was groovin' to Sade (shah-DAY) at 5AM. I was drawn in despite the early hour. Nice harmonies, voice. Chill.

Version:

"Life Round Here (remix)" by James Blake

Song: Life Round Here ft Chance the Rapper
Artist: James Blake
Commentary: James Blake is cool, Chance the Rapper is cool. This version of "Life Round Here" is pretty cool. And they have a decent music video for it.

Version:

"You're Not Good Enough" by Blood Orange

Song: You're Not Good Enough
Artist: Blood Orange
Album: Cupid Deluxe
Also try:  Daft Punk, Disclosure, Nicolas Jaar
Commentary: I kept wanting to like Cupid Deluxe because it's the best album cover of the year. It took me 3 full-album listens though to get into it. "You're Not Good Enough" is kind of a no-brainer, though. That and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" are stuck in my head this week, if that places it for you.

Version:

"On a Clear Day" by the Peddlers

Song: On a Clear Day
Artist: the Peddlers
Also try:  the other cook scenes in Breaking Bad
Commentary: I really enjoyed the whole (meth) cook scene along with this song. I thought for sure, with that beat, that the song was new with "retro" vocals. Wrong! Just good, old-fashioned BritPop.

Version:

"Kindred" by Burial

Song: Kindred
Artist: Burial
Album: Kindred EP
Also try:  Lapalux, Tim Hecker, Nicolaas Jaar
Commentary: The Kindred EP made a splash and it is awesome. Three longish electronic tracks that are totally worth your time.

Version:
